Although bedbugs are moving from city to city, they’re not going away. And, it seems, the larger the city in which you live, the more likely you are to have a bedbug problem.
Big Cities Top Bedbug List
According to Orkin’s list of Top 50 Bed Bug Cities, the top four cities are four of the largest and most populated cities in the U.S., and three of four have moved up in the ranks from the 2014 list, while #1 has stayed the same:
- Chicago – This is the fourth year in a year that Chicago has ranked as the top bedbug city in the U.S. Be sure to check your hotel room if you travel to Chicago!
- Los Angeles – At #2, Los Angeles has moved up two spots from last year, making its residents and visitors a bit more susceptible to bedbugs.
- Washington, D.C. – Our nation’s capital moved up significantly in bedbug problems over the last year, jumping 11 spots from #14 in 2014 to #3 in 2015.
- New York City – NYC was even harder hit, with a jump of 14 spots in rank, from #18 to #4. It seems that the bedbugs are just as active as the people in this “city the never sleeps.”
Top 15 Bedbug Cities
The list ranks cities by the number of residential and commercial bed bug treatments Orkin serviced from January through December 2015, with bedbugs having been verified as present by an Orkin inspection verified bed bugs were present. The remaining Top 50 Bedbug Cities are:
5. Columbus, Ohio (down 2 spots)
6. Philadelphia (no change)
7. Detroit (down 5 spots)
8.Cincinnati (down 1 spot)
9. Richmond-Petersburg, Va. (no change)
10. Baltimore (up 21 spots)
11. Raleigh-Durham, N.C. (up 6 spots)
12. Cleveland-Akron-Canton, Ohio (down 7 spots)
13. Dallas-Ft. Worth (down 7 spots)
14. San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose (up 2 spots)
15. Indianapolis (down 4 spots)
Ohio Seeing Fewer Bedbugs?
Although the state of Ohio has the most cities in the top 15 list, it could also be given the award for the Most Improved.
Each of the cities moved down in ranking, meaning fewer bedbug treatments were made in 2015 than in 2014, in relation to the other cities.
Other significant facts from the list include are the addition of Orlando and Philadelphia to the top 50. Orlando had never previously been a Top-50 city, while Philadelphia has been off the list since 2011. The Midwest is the most represented region, including (in addition to the Ohio cities as cited above) multiple cities in Illinois, Michigan and Kentucky. At the same time, however, the region saw a number of its cities drop down the list, with significant reduction for Dayton, Ohio and Louisville, Ky. (both down 17 spots), and Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle Creek, Mich. (down 12 spots).
With six cities moving up in the ranks by double digits, it seems that the cities in which increased care needs to be taken are: Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C.-Asheville, N.C. (+26), Baltimore (+21), New York (+14), Charlotte, N.C. (+14), Washington, D.C. (+11), and Knoxville, Tenn. (+10).
